What’s in Your Roof? Know Before You Treat.

Rats, mice, and possums all need different approaches — misidentification wastes time and money

🐁

Roof Rats (Black Rats)

Agile climbers. Enter via roof tiles, eave gaps, and overhanging trees. Active most of the night — rapid, continuous scratching sounds. Most common rodent in Sydney roof voids.

Treatment: Tamper-resistant bait stations in roof void and external perimeter. Trapping in accessible areas. Proofing of entry points.

🐁

House Mice

Squeeze through 6mm gaps — almost any penetration is a potential entry point. Light, rapid scratching, often in walls. Contaminate food surfaces and gnaw wiring.

Treatment: Snap trapping combined with gel bait. Internal bait stations in concealed locations away from pets and children.

🦡

Common Brushtail Possum

Loud, heavy thumping in short bursts just after dark. Larger than a cat — you’ll know when one’s in your roof. Protected native animal — cannot be killed or relocated without a licence.

Treatment: Licensed cage trapping, humane relocation, one-way exclusion devices, and sealing of entry points.

Warning Signs — Don’t Ignore These

🐰

Scratching or running sounds at night

Rats are most active in the first few hours after dark with rapid, continuous movement. Possums make louder, heavier thumping in shorter bursts. Mice produce light, quick scratching often in wall cavities.

🐋

Droppings near walls, in cupboards, or in the roof void

Rat droppings are tapered and 10–20mm. Mouse droppings are small (3–6mm). Possum droppings are large, dark pellets. Location and size help confirm species before treatment.

Gnaw marks on wiring, pipes, or timber

Rodents gnaw continuously to wear down their incisors. Electrical wiring is a prime target — gnawed insulation is a serious fire risk and can void your home insurance if evidence of rodent activity is present.

😳

Strong ammonia smell from roof void or subfloor

Concentrated rodent urine has a strong, sharp odour — particularly detectable in enclosed roof spaces and subfloor areas. A pervasive smell is a sign of significant harbourage activity in those zones.

🔍

Grease smears along skirting boards or beams

Rats travel the same paths repeatedly, leaving dark grease marks from their fur against surfaces. These trails help us map movement patterns and place bait stations and traps at maximum-catch locations.

Possum in Your Roof? It’s Not as Simple as Trapping.

Possums are protected under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act. Trapping without a licence is an offence. We hold the required NSW licences — we trap humanely, relocate within the legally required distance, and seal the entry points so they can’t return. Done properly, one visit is all it takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have rats or a possum in my roof?

Possums make loud, heavy thumping in short bursts just after dark and before dawn. Rats produce rapid, continuous scratching and running for longer periods through the night. Mice are lighter and quicker — often heard in wall cavities. We confirm species during inspection before recommending treatment.

Can I remove possums myself in NSW?

No. Possums are protected under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. Trapping, relocating, or harming a possum without the appropriate licence is an offence. We hold NSW possum management licences and only relocate within the legally permitted distance from capture.

How long does rodent treatment take to work?

Rodent populations typically collapse within 2–4 weeks of treatment. We schedule 1–2 follow-up visits within that period to replenish bait, monitor trap catches, and confirm activity has ceased before closing the job.

Will rodents come back after treatment?

Without proofing, new rodents will find the same entry points over time. Sealing identified entry points is the most important step in preventing re-infestation — we include a proofing assessment in every rodent program. Need broader home pest protection? Our residential pest control service covers cockroaches, spiders, ants, and more in a single visit.
